. . . . . A PRAYER OF A PIT BULL . . . . .

Spirit in the sky, who watches over all animals: It is my prayer and my request that you grant greater understanding, and acceptance to humans; those who love us, and those who hate us.

That they will know how loyal we are, how brave we are, and how loving we are. Help them to accept us as a breed in whole, and not let the few tragedies shine brighter than the many great traits that we have.

And those who would kill me, let them know, I forgive them, even though I don't understand their hatred. And those who would beat me, let them know I still love them, even though it is not the honorable way.

Thank you for all the strong traits that you have given to me, and my breed. Help those to know that I stand for courage, strength, loyalty, and bravery. And as my master already knows, let those who would come against my family know that I would surely die defending them.

And just one last thing that I would ask: Let my master know, that if you should call me away, that I will wait patiently at those pearly gates until the one who chose me, comes home.

Amen.

INFORMATION BITS: The essential characteristics of American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence and zest for life.

A PIT BULL'S VIEW OF LIFE . . .

Never pretend to be something you're not. Everyone knows you are a 70 pound lap dog, so don't pretend that you are not.

If you have a stick in your mouth, you automatically switch to super overdrive, and will be compelled to run around like you are insane...

If your people won't let you on the bed, cry, whine and look pathetic until they do, and if they don't, jump directly on vulnerable parts when they are sleeping.

Be excessive, if they ask you to get a stick, bring back a tree, if they ask for a kiss, drench their face.

If someone seems to not want to be friends, follow them around, stare at them, bark at them, cry, and if they are sitting, sit directly on them, and kiss them until they can't breath.

Always sit where everyone is, and if they are in the same place, like the couch or bed, make sure to plop yourself in between them, and do not move.

If they try to move you, be stubborn, dig in your heels, and if they do move you, refer to the rule above.

If you want to add a little excitement to your life...chase something, the cat, squirrels, raccoons, see how your people come running and yelling. I have found that porcupines and skunks work exceptionally well, but don't ever catch them, or you'll end up in the bath tub or the vet's.

Baths are always bad, unless someone is already in there, or it's with the hose or the water gun they think is punishment.

Act as silly as you can when you do something wrong, and you should get away with it. The trick is to make them laugh...

Work that tongue of yours...let them come close enough and then surprise them with a lick "snake's style" right on the mouth!

Make sure to always go for the most comfortable couch in the house...
even if it is already occupied. Same thing goes for your favorite lap.

When it's in your best interest, always practice obedience, keeping a keen eye on the hand that holds the treat, unless there is something more interesting within 100 yards, then ignore everyone and focus entirely on the more interesting person/dog/thing to the point of reaching a trance state.

Allow the experience of
fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy and prompt you to produce copious amounts of drool to leave on all interior car windows.

Never miss the opportunity to cuddle with a loved one...

. . . . . . TOYS FOR YOUR PIT BULL . . . . . .

It is important to provide your Pit Bull with toys that are safe for him. Due to the strength and aggression that Pit Bulls naturally have, it is often hard for owners to find suitable toys that are strong enough to hold up to the dog. Many Pit Bulls are also hard to please when it comes to toys, they want just the right size, shape, and texture, or they won’t have anything to do with it. Purchasing toys that are Pit Bull suitable can get expensive, but can often help prevent your Pit Bull from chewing up your belongings.

Many Pit Bull owners prefer a toy called the Galileo Bone. It is produced by Nylabone, and proves to be able to hold up pretty well with the average Pit Bull. AT least, it lasts long enough to kind of make you feel like you have gotten your money’s worth. Nylabone also makes the Crazy Ball, which is also a really tough toy designed for Pit Bulls.

Kong toys can in many different sizes and colors, and many can be stuffed with your Pit Bull’s favorite treats. They have tremendous durability, so are especially great for Pit Bulls that like to chew a lot. Most Pit Bulls will occupy themselves for hours with these toys.

Many companies also produce interactive toys, some of which are tough enough to withstand your Pit Bull. These toys hold his interest with sounds and lights, usually good for a few hours of play before he gets bored with it.

Plush toys are also good for some Pit Bulls, it is important to make sure that you purchase one that doesn’t have small parts that could easily be chewed off and swallowed. These are probably toys that you would want to supervise your Pit Bull playing with, or use them to just play fetch with.

Rope toys can soon become a favorite for you both. They help to clean your Pit Bull’s teeth, and can be great for fetch. They work well for getting you involved in your Pit Bull’s play, as they work great for tug of war matches. It is important to keep in mind when pulling that you need to be careful not to pull too hard, as you may accidentally break one of your Pit Bull’s teeth.

Balls are popular with almost any dog, again the important thing here is to purchase one that is made of material durable enough to hold up to your Pit Bull. Larger balls will probably work better, as they will be harder for him to get in his mouth.

Toys are a necessity for your Pit Bull. Just keep in mind your Pit Bull’s personality and strength, so that you can buy the best toy for him. There are several sites online that sell toys suited for Pit Bulls, or your local pet supply may have them as well.

HOW EASY IS SOCIALIZATION WITH THIS BREED?

With humans, the pit bull is very easy to socialize but, since they tend to be very enthusiastic, they should be taught manners early on. A trained pit bull is often a "social butterfly," loving friends and strangers alike. As with most breeds, socialization with humans of all types should be part of the dog's training for life. Note: A pit bull that shows unprovoked human aggression, especially with children, is NOT typical of the breed and is showing very poor temperament. Such a dog should be thoroughly evaluated by a trainer or behaviorist experienced in the breed for a final determination of their temperament and recommendation on how to proceed
